Who LinMot is

LinMot is a Swiss brand of tubular linear motors and the drives that run them. The company behind it, NTI AG, operates the LinMot and MagSpring brands and manufactures linear motors and linear motor systems for industrial machines worldwide. LinMot is a trademark of its owner.

A LinMot motor replaces a pneumatic cylinder or a motor-and-screw actuator with a direct electromagnetic drive: a stainless steel slider full of permanent magnets moves inside a stator containing the coils and position sensing. With no screw, belt or gearbox, the only wearing parts are the slider bearings, and the stroke, speed and force profile are set in software. UK engineers usually meet LinMot on packaging, assembly, pick-and-place and test machines that need fast, repeatable short strokes.

History and ownership

NTI AG says it was founded in 1993 as an independent business unit of the Sulzer Group, the Swiss engineering group, and has operated as an independent company since 2000. Its imprint records the commercial register entry CH-020.3.023.521-2, with Swiss law applying and jurisdiction in Zurich.

The headquarters is in Spreitenbach, west of Zurich. The company states that production takes place in Switzerland and Slovakia, and that it has subsidiaries in Germany, Italy and the USA, plus a network of sales, service and system integration partners on every continent. NTI AG does not publish its shareholders, so this profile does not name an owner beyond the company itself.

Product portfolio

The LinMot series we list are:

  • P01 tubular linear motors by stator diameter: P01-23, P01-37 and P01-48.
  • P02-23S, a slim 23 mm motor for small, fast strokes where space is tight.
  • Industrial P10 motors: P10-54 and P10-70, which run from mains-powered AC drives for heavier, long-stroke axes.
  • Linear-rotary motors: PR01 and PR02, which combine a linear stroke and a rotary axis for tasks such as capping, screwing and pick-and-turn.
  • MagSpring M01, a passive magnetic spring that holds up a vertical load so the motor does not have to.
  • Drives: C1100, C1200, E1200 and E1400, from compact low-voltage DC drives with fieldbus and industrial Ethernet options to the mains-powered E1400 for the P10 motors.

For background on how direct linear drives compare with screw actuators, see our linear actuators hub, the servo drives hub and the guide to sizing a linear actuator.

What LinMot is known for technically

Three ideas define LinMot.

The first is the tubular format itself. Because the magnetic circuit wraps fully around the slider, a tubular motor packs useful force into a cylinder-like shape and mounts much like a pneumatic cylinder. That makes it a natural upgrade on machines designed around pneumatics, adding programmable positions and soft landings without redesigning the frame.

The second is the linear-rotary motor. Putting a rotary motor on the back of a linear motor, sharing one slider, gives a compact two-axis unit for operations that push and turn at the same time.

The third is MagSpring. A vertical linear motor normally has to produce continuous force just to hold the load up, which heats it and wastes energy. A MagSpring provides a near-constant passive force to cancel the weight, so the motor only supplies the dynamic force. It also keeps the load from dropping when power is removed, though it does not replace a safety brake where one is required.

When comparing a LinMot axis with an alternative, check peak and continuous force, stroke, the moving mass including the payload, the required move time and cycle rate, vertical or horizontal mounting, side loads on the slider, IP rating, and the drive interface to the PLC.

Industries served

NTI AG describes its motors as used in industrial applications worldwide. Tubular linear motors of this type are commonly found on packaging and filling lines, assembly and handling stations, labelling and pick-and-place units, and test rigs, wherever a short, fast, programmable stroke replaces a pneumatic cylinder.

Global and UK presence

NTI AG runs subsidiaries in Germany, Italy and the USA, with LinMot USA Inc. based in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Elsewhere, including the UK, it works through local sales and service partners, found through its LinMot Global page. LinMot’s contact page does not list a UK office.

Specify Motion and LinMot

Specify Motion is independent of LinMot and NTI AG and is not a distributor for either. We can help you source LinMot motors and drives where available, or propose equivalents from our supply network that meet the same published specification, confirmed by an engineer. See our page on alternatives to LinMot linear motors or use find a replacement with your current model code.

LinMot linear motors

Tubular linear motor

P01-23 (incl. P01-23 HP)

LinMot's smallest 23 mm tubular direct-drive linear motor. A slider full of magnets moves through a short stator, so the motor needs no ball screw or belt. The HP variants give more force.

Tubular linear motor

P02-23 S (P02-23Sx80F-HP)

A slim 23 mm tubular linear motor in LinMot's P02 range, sold alongside the PS01-23x80 HP stators. It is built for small, fast strokes where space is tight.

Tubular linear motor

P01-37 (incl. P01-37 S and HP)

A mid-size 37 mm tubular linear motor covering medium forces and strokes up to about 1.5 m. It is offered in standard, slim (S) and high-performance (HP) stators.

Tubular linear motor

P01-48 (incl. P01-48 HP)

LinMot's largest 48 mm P01 tubular motor, giving over 1 kN peak on a 48/72 VDC supply. Stainless-steel versions are available for hygienic and wash-down use.

Tubular linear motor

P10-54

An industrial 54 mm tubular linear motor that runs directly from 1x230 VAC or 3x400 VAC drives, for fast, long-stroke axes with fan or fluid cooling.

Tubular linear motor

P10-70

LinMot's most powerful tubular linear motor at 70 mm, for 3x400 VAC drives. It gives multi-kN peak force for heavy, long-stroke work.

Linear-rotary motor

PR01 linear-rotary motors

Combined linear-and-rotary motors that pair a P01 linear motor with a rotary servo in one housing, so a single unit can push and twist, with optional gearbox and hollow shaft.

Linear-rotary motor

PR02 linear-rotary motors

The newer linear-rotary series, with options for a built-in MagSpring, force sensor and torque sensor. It suits screw-driving and press-and-turn processes that need checking.

Linear motors

MagSpring M01

A passive magnetic spring that applies a nearly constant force across its stroke. It is used to carry the weight of vertical loads so the linear motor does not have to hold them, or as a fail-safe return.
