Who Princetel is

Princetel, Inc. is a US specialist in fibre optic rotary joints (FORJs), the rotary equivalent of a fibre connector that lets optical signals cross a continuously rotating interface. It is based in Hamilton, New Jersey, makes its joints at its US facility and sells worldwide. Alongside FORJs it builds electrical slip rings designed to sit around or alongside its joints, cable reels that integrate both, and fibre handling equipment.

Engineers tend to come to Princetel for optical channels: from a single-channel joint 6.8 mm in diameter for a probe or ROV tether, to 36-channel units for radar and multi-sensor platforms.

History and ownership

Princetel was founded in the autumn of 2000 and describes itself as a small for-profit social enterprise. Its About page records memberships of the National Association of Broadcasters (2004), the Sercos association, CleanPower and Optica (all 2008) and AFCEA (2011), which reflect its broadcast, industrial networking, renewable and defence markets. A 2024 quality certificate on the site references AS9100 and ISO 9001.

The website names Princetel, Inc. as the company and trademark owner but does not name founders, a parent company or shareholders, so we have not stated them. It also lists legacy laser diode products, a reminder that the business started in photonics.

Product portfolio

Our series records summarise Princetel’s published datasheets:

  • MJX series: single-channel miniature FORJ, 6.8 mm diameter, single-mode or multimode over 650–1,650 nm, insertion loss under 2 dB (typically under 0.5 dB), up to 2,000 rpm, -40 to +85 °C, IP68 and 200–400 million revolutions life.
  • MJ2 series: two-channel multimode joint for LED sources, 20 mm diameter, up to 100 rpm. Princetel points laser users to its ZJn or MXn series instead.
  • JXn series: 2 to 19 channels, each single-mode or multimode, typically 2–3 dB insertion loss, up to 200 rpm and up to IP65 in a 67 mm body.
  • MRn series: 20 to 36 channels (24 the most common), single-mode and multimode mixable, up to 200 rpm, 67 mm by 221 mm.
  • SRP90 series: an electrical slip ring designed to pair with its FORJs, 2–10 A per ring at 1,000 V RMS (2,000 V optional), 500 rpm, with a stainless steel body that takes about 0.5 tonne of axial load.
  • SR223 series: a 20 mm diameter slip ring with up to 40 rings, designed to match its RPT and MJ2 joints.

Other lines include the R series, PJ2 plastic optical fibre joints, ZJn and MXn multi-channel joints, the SRG12, SRF24, SR202 and SR723 slip rings, a high-load mechanical swivel, custom motor-driven and standard manual cable reels, fibre optic feedthroughs and FP180 polishing machines.

Technologies and standards

Princetel says its joints are designed to comply with Telcordia GR-1209 and GR-1021 and to meet or exceed MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-167-1A for shock and vibration. The useful datasheet figures to compare between suppliers are insertion loss, insertion loss variation over a revolution (often called wow), return loss for single-mode links, speed, life and channel count. Princetel also offers a pressure-compensated version (RPC) for subsea use.

If a link must carry several channels and power, the usual design is a FORJ on the axis with an electrical slip ring around it; Princetel’s SR and SRP ranges are built for that. Our page on fibre optic rotary joints explains the trade-offs, and Ethernet through slip rings compares copper and fibre data paths.

Industries served

Princetel lists military, biomedical, wind energy, geophysical, broadcasting, robotics, mining, machinery, entertainment and communications. Typical uses include ROV and subsea tethers, radar and antenna pedestals, camera cranes and broadcast systems, wind turbines and medical probes. See slip rings for ROV and subsea and slip rings for radar antennas.

Points to check when comparing Princetel FORJs

Compare insertion loss and its variation over a full revolution together, as a joint with low typical loss but large variation can still upset a link. For single-mode systems, check return loss, because reflections can disturb laser sources. Confirm the speed: many multi-channel joints are rated at 100 to 200 rpm. Check the connector type and polish (PC or APC) at both ends, and whether the joint needs to sit inside an electrical slip ring, in which case its outside diameter and length set the slip ring’s bore.

Global and UK presence

Princetel runs one site in Hamilton, New Jersey and sells through distributors. In the UK it lists Laser 2000 Ltd in Kettering, Northamptonshire (+44 1933 461666, sales@laser2000.co.uk). In Europe it lists MACCON in Germany, Servotecnica in Italy, Transmark Subsea in Norway, Auxema-Stemmann in Spain, Penlink in Sweden and Slipring A.S. in Turkey, plus partners in Asia-Pacific, Canada, Israel and India.

What to send when specifying a Princetel FORJ

Give the number of fibre channels, mode (single-mode or multimode, and fibre type), wavelengths, the acceptable insertion loss and variation, return loss for single-mode links, connector type and finish, speed, life, temperature, IP or depth rating, and any electrical circuits or cable reel that must be combined with the joint.

Specify Motion is independent of Princetel. Our engineers can help source Princetel products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the slip rings hub.
