Who Morgan Advanced Materials is

Morgan Advanced Materials plc is a British engineered-materials group with three businesses: Thermal Products, Performance Carbon and Technical Ceramics. It says it employs about 8,100 people across 57 operating sites. Its registered office is in Windsor, Berkshire.

For slip ring engineers the relevant part is Performance Carbon, which makes electrical carbon: carbon brushes, brush holders and rockers, slip ring assemblies for wind turbine generators, current collectors and shaft grounding. Morgan is not a maker of instrument or capsule slip rings; its strength is the brush-and-ring interface in large power machines, where brush grade, spring force and ring material decide wear, sparking and maintenance intervals.

History and ownership

Morgan’s history page traces the group to a London crucible works:

  • 1856: the Morgan brothers found the Patent Plumbago Crucible Company, making graphite crucibles in Battersea, London.
  • 1881: renamed The Morgan Crucible Company; shares are floated in 1890.
  • 1907: commutator brush production begins at Battersea and a sales office opens in Germany.
  • 1925: a brush factory is established in New York.
  • 1946: the company is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
  • 1971–76: brush manufacturing moves from Battersea to Morriston, South Wales.
  • 2013: the group is renamed Morgan Advanced Materials.

Morgan Advanced Materials plc is registered in England under company number 286773, and its registrar is Equiniti. Its website shows a quoted share price and names no parent company.

Product portfolio

Morgan publishes few numeric ratings for these products, so our series records capture what its brochures say:

  • Wind turbine generator slip ring assemblies: complete brush, rocker, holder and slip ring systems for generators from 850 kW to 10 MW, 144 to 450 mm in diameter, with stainless steel or bronze rings in moulded or built-up designs, for new turbines and retrofits.
  • Wind turbine brush holders and rockers: phase, shaft-grounding and lightning brush holders with constant-force springs, improved multi-point radial contact and conversions for longer brushes.
  • Wind turbine carbon brushes: phase, earth, lightning protection and pitch control brushes in around 20 grades for bronze, steel and high-load rings, including the National S22 silver grade, with cross-references for many turbine platforms.
  • Power generation brushes and holders: carbon brushes and multi-axis adjustable holders for generators and motors, led by the National 634 grade for turbo alternators.

Performance Carbon also lists crane collectors, railway current collectors, AEGIS SGR earthing systems, seal faces, sliding bearings, specialty graphite and high-temperature felts.

Technologies and standards

Morgan’s expertise is carbon and metal-graphite material science: matching brush grade to ring material, current density and surface speed, building a stable patina, and controlling sparking and wear. Its wind brochure lists nominal current density, speed, resistivity, density and metal content for each grade, and supports UL and DIN specifications. National S22, its latest silver grade, is designed to form continuous metal channels for conductivity. For engineers, the practical point is that a “slip ring problem” in a generator is often a brush grade or spring problem, so specify the ring and brushes together. Our high-current slip rings page and how to specify a slip ring guide cover the basics.

Industries served

Performance Carbon serves wind and power generation, hydropower, transportation and rail, aerospace, semiconductor, industrial and petrochemical plant, mining and construction, home and industrial appliances, and security and defence. See slip rings for wind turbines and the renewable energy market page.

Points to check when comparing Morgan slip ring parts

For wind generator slip rings, the brush grade, ring material and holder design work as a system, so a like-for-like comparison has to cover all three. Check the current density and surface speed of the brush grade against the generator’s operating point, the spring force and brush length (which set the maintenance interval), and whether the ring is bronze or steel. For aftermarket parts, confirm the turbine platform, generator supplier and ring diameter, because similar-looking turbines can use different slip ring assemblies. Ask for nominal grade data in writing before trialling a new brush.

Global and UK presence

Performance Carbon lists 35 sales and manufacturing locations worldwide. In the UK it manufactures at Upper Fforest Way, Swansea SA6 8PP (+44 1792 763000) and at North Moons Moat, Redditch B98 9NB (+44 1527 69205). In Europe it has sites in France, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden. Enquiries go through the Performance Carbon contact form.

What to send when specifying Morgan slip ring parts

Give the generator or turbine make and model, ring diameter and material, current per phase, surface speed, existing brush grade and holder, operating environment and the maintenance interval you want. Photos of the ring surface and worn brushes help diagnose patina and wear issues.

Specify Motion is independent of Morgan Advanced Materials. Our engineers can help source Morgan slip ring products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the slip rings hub.
