Servo motor and drive compatibility review

Check a motor, drive, encoder and controller combination before buying. Get help with third-party motors, replacement axes and mixed-brand motion systems.

Pricing and availability

Get the right products, pricing and supply support

Send us a part number, or tell us what the machine needs to do. Our UK engineers will come back with the right product, pricing, lead time and delivery, whether that is the original part, a checked alternative or a complete axis.

  • Original parts or a checked alternative
  • Pricing, lead time and delivery in one reply
  • Components, complete axes and ongoing support

No obligation. Add what you know and an engineer will help with the rest. Prefer to configure it? Build a specification.

Add quantity, timing or application notes (optional)

Build your specification

Select every part you need and answer the questions an applications engineer would ask. Our engineers use your specification to come back with the right products, pricing and lead times. You see your summary before we ask for any details.

What are you specifying?

Select everything you need. A motor, drive and gearbox can be specified together as one axis.

In short:A compatible system needs more than matching power and voltage. Establish the feedback, motor constants, current conventions, controller interface and commissioning route.

Define the combination rather than a single component

A motor may be capable of the required torque while the proposed drive cannot read its encoder or commutate it correctly. Equally, a drive that supports a fieldbus may not support the controller functions, device description or firmware combination the machine needs. Give us the complete model codes at both ends of each connection.

This service enquiry is useful when keeping an existing motor, selecting a third-party drive, changing a feedback device, or assembling a new axis from several manufacturers. ADVANCED Motion Controls publishes examples of third-party motor compatibility but explicitly explains that a listing is a starting point, rather than a guarantee. The same care belongs in any mixed-brand selection.

What the review needs to establish

InterfaceInformation to collect
Motor to driveWinding, rated and peak current definitions, voltage, motor constants, inductance and temperature sensor
Feedback to driveProtocol, supply voltage, data format, commutation information, connector and pin assignment
Controller to driveNetwork, supported modes, synchronisation, firmware and device-description file
Mechanical loadTorque-speed profile, inertia, flange, shaft, coupling and load support
Stopping and holdingBrake control, regeneration and the machine’s assessed safety requirements

A connector with the same shell may have a different pinout. A current rating expressed as peak phase current is not directly interchangeable with an RMS rating. These are reasons to ask for the original datasheets rather than infer a match from a catalogue headline.

Keep the machine requirements visible

Tell us whether the application needs position, speed or torque control, coordinated axes, electronic gearing, homing or an external load encoder. Describe which operating software and programming environment must stay. A replacement can be technically capable but still create unacceptable commissioning work.

If drawings are available, identify the electrical interface and mounting arrangement. If they are not, start with photographs and the existing model codes. The compatibility checklist can be used by purchasing and engineering together.

What to request

Ask for a proposed motor-drive-feedback combination, the assumptions behind it and the remaining checks before purchase. Where a supply-network option such as Motion Control Products is suitable, it can be considered alongside original-part sourcing. Published series figures do not authorise us to call two models equivalent.

For a production design, request the documentation and commissioning responsibilities in the quotation. Site work, programming and validation are not assumed to be included; the relevant support arrangements must be agreed for the project.

Turn the requirement into an enquiry

Send the application, quantities and deadline, plus any existing model codes. We can discuss the original part, alternatives or a matched package. Compatibility, availability and supply arrangements are confirmed for the specific enquiry.

How it works

From enquiry to delivery

Send a part number or describe the application. Our engineers take it from there: the right product, a clear quotation, and delivery and support arranged.

  1. Tell us what you needSend a part number, or configure the application, quantities and timing.
  2. An engineer reviews itWe check the specification and find the original part, a checked equivalent or a complete axis.
  3. Receive your quotationProducts, pricing, lead time and compatibility notes in one reply.
  4. Order and deliveryWhen you are happy, the order is placed and delivery and after-sales support are arranged.
