What are you specifying?

Select everything you need. A motor, drive and gearbox can be specified together as one axis.

In short:Indexing performance depends on the complete move and settle cycle. Table diameter or payload alone cannot establish motor torque or gearbox suitability.

Define the index and the process separately

An indexing table moves a payload into position, settles and then holds it while a process takes place. Give the index angle, move time, settling allowance and dwell. State whether the process adds a cutting, clamping or assembly torque and whether an external mechanism holds the table during that period.

The payload distribution matters as much as its mass. A fixture near the rim creates a different inertia from the same mass close to the axis. Include the table, fixtures, workpieces, couplings and any tooling that rotates with them. The proposed transmission also contributes inertia and compliance.

Geared servo or direct drive?

ArrangementMain questions
Servo with precision gearboxRatio, backlash, torsional stiffness, duty, output bearing loads and mounting
Direct-drive torque motorContinuous and peak torque, installed cooling, load bearing arrangement and feedback
Separate mechanical indexerRequired motion law, integration, holding requirements and flexibility

A gearbox can reduce reflected inertia, but an aggressive move can still be limited by settling or mechanical vibration. A high-resolution encoder at the motor does not directly measure movement lost through a transmission. Where table position is critical, discuss whether feedback is needed at the load.

Illustrative requirement, not a customer project

Consider a hypothetical table that indexes 90 degrees, then dwells for inspection. Before selecting anything, establish whether the cycle permits one second for the whole operation or one second just for the movement. Decide how much of the interval is available for acceleration, deceleration and settling. A motor sized for a gentle move can be unsuitable for a shorter cycle with the same final angle.

No product or performance result is claimed by this example. Use the RMS torque tool only after the torque and duration of the segments have been established.

Connections through the rotating assembly

If sensors, clamps or tooling rotate continuously, record power, data and fluid connections. A slip ring and rotary union may need to be specified alongside the axis. Include the central bore, cable routing and maintenance access before the mechanical envelope is fixed.

Send a sketch, payload distribution, cycle timing and positioning requirements. We can discuss motors, gearing, encoders and rotary connections as a package, then confirm the selected configuration against the actual duty.

Product ranges to discuss

These are starting points from the catalogue, rather than a confirmed selection. Options within a series vary; an engineer must check the exact configuration.

Turn the requirement into an enquiry

Send the application, quantities and deadline, plus any existing model codes. We can discuss the original part, alternatives or a matched package. Compatibility, availability and supply arrangements are confirmed for the specific enquiry.
