What a closed-loop stepper drive is

A closed-loop stepper drive runs a stepper motor with encoder feedback. It compares commanded and actual position and corrects errors, preventing missed steps under varying load. Many drives also adjust current to the load, running cooler and quieter than open-loop drives, and can raise an alarm on position error. The drive typically accepts step and direction pulses, or fieldbus commands, and is matched to a motor fitted with a specific encoder.

When engineers choose a closed-loop stepper drive

Choose a closed-loop stepper drive when open-loop steppers risk losing steps, run too hot or need fault reporting, but a full servo system is not justified. It suits indexing, packaging and pick-and-place axes. The trade-offs are cost and compatibility: the motor needs a compatible encoder, and dynamics remain below a servo at high speed. For simple steady loads, an open-loop drive is cheaper.

How to specify the Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316

Send these with your enquiry and an engineer can confirm the right TMCM-1316 variant or an equivalent:

  • Supply voltage (V DC or AC)
  • Phase current (A)
  • Encoder type and resolution
  • Command interface
  • Alarm and fault outputs
  • Tuning modes
  • Motor compatibility

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using an encoder resolution or wiring the drive does not support
  • Not connecting the alarm output
  • Expecting servo performance at high speed
  • Skipping tuning on heavy loads

Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316: frequently asked questions

Can you help replace Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316 or source the original?

Send the full model code, quantity and required date. Our engineers can check original-part availability and assess suitable alternatives, including supply-network options where appropriate. We confirm compatibility and any changes needed before recommending a replacement.

What is the Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316?

Single-axis stepper controller/driver for closed-loop operation with an external encoder, using the TMC4361 and TMC5160: 10–30 V, up to 5.7 A RMS, RS485, USB and step/direction. Published series figures include voltage 30 V, axes 1, current 5.7 A. It is made by Analog Devices, Inc.; Specify Motion can help source it or propose an equivalent.

Who makes the Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316?

The Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316 is made by Trinamic (Analog Devices) (Analog Devices, Inc.) and is listed here for engineers comparing options. Specify Motion is not affiliated with Analog Devices, Inc.; brand names are used only to identify the product.

What is the voltage of the Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316?

The published series maximum voltage is 30 V. Individual models and sizes in the TMCM-1316 range vary, so check the exact variant against your duty cycle, mounting and environment, or ask our engineers to confirm the right size for you.

Is there an alternative to the Trinamic (Analog Devices) TMCM-1316?

We can assess suitable replacement options. On published figures, Leadshine CS-D Series and Leadshine CS1 Series are options to assess from our supply network. An engineer confirms the fit against your application before recommending anything.

What happens when a closed-loop stepper hits an overload?

The drive detects position error from the encoder and increases current to correct it. If the error exceeds a set threshold, the drive raises an alarm and may disable the motor. This prevents silent position loss. The controller should respond to the alarm output.

Can I use any encoder with a closed-loop stepper drive?

Usually not. Closed-loop drives support specific encoder types, resolutions and wiring, often matched to motors from the same range. Check compatibility before mixing motors and drives. Using an unsupported encoder can prevent the closed-loop functions, stall detection and current optimisation from working at all.
