Who Neugart is

Neugart is a German manufacturer that specialises in planetary gearboxes for servo and stepper motors. It is based in Kippenheim, between Freiburg and Offenburg in Baden-Württemberg, and sells through its own subsidiaries and sales partners worldwide. For machine builders, Neugart is one of the established catalogue sources of in-line and right-angle planetary gearboxes, from inexpensive economy units for stepper motors to low-backlash precision gearboxes for dynamic servo axes. Neugart is a trademark of its owner.

The company publishes a group headcount of 781, with more than 660 at the Kippenheim headquarters, and a group turnover of over €96.9 million in 2024.

History and ownership

Karl Neugart started making gear parts in 1928 in Furtwangen in the Black Forest, a region with a long clock-making tradition. The business moved to Kippenheim in 1943 and was making mantel clocks by 1952. In 1967 Karl Neugart divided the company equally between his son Georg Neugart and his daughter Erika Herr, and the same year the first sales companies were set up in Germany, France, Italy, Austria and the Benelux countries.

The move into motion control came in 1975, when Neugart developed its first planetary gearboxes for stepper motors. The first catalogue planetary range, PL, followed in 1989, and the PLE series, still one of its best-known products, was launched in 1993. Quality and environmental certification to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 followed in 1996 and 2008.

International expansion brought Neugart USA (1997, now in Charlotte, North Carolina), companies in Italy and France (2003), a production subsidiary in Shenyang, China (2004), and companies in Turkey and Brazil (2011). Neugart Holding GmbH was founded in 2011. The third and fourth generations of the Neugart and Herr families have been involved in running the business; Holger Obergföll and Swen Herrmann became managing partners of Neugart GmbH in 2024, and Lennart Neugart became a co-owner of Neugart Holding in 2026. Plant III in Kippenheim opened in 2025.

Product portfolio

Economy planetary gearboxes

The PLE is an in-line planetary gearbox with shaft output in frames 40 to 160 mm, ratios from 3:1 to 512:1 and maximum output torque up to 1,280 Nm, with standard backlash from under 6 arcmin to under 22 arcmin depending on size and stages. The PLFE offers similar ratings with an ISO 9409-1 flange output for direct mounting of pinions, pulleys and rotary loads. The WPLE adds a bevel right-angle stage for tight spaces, with ratios to 512:1 and maximum torque up to 415 Nm. Economy units are rated IP54.

Precision planetary gearboxes

The PLN is the precision in-line range: frames 70 to 190 mm, ratios 3:1 to 100:1, maximum output torque up to 2,880 Nm and backlash under 1 arcmin in the reduced-backlash option, with IP65 protection. The PSNpro uses helical gearing for quieter running, in frames 55 to 190 mm with maximum torques up to 2,210 Nm. Variants such as PSBNpro and PSFNpro, and right-angle precision units such as WPLN and WPSFN, extend the range.

Our gearbox hub covers how to size a planetary gearbox, and the harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal guide explains where planetary gearing fits against other reducers.

Technologies and standards

Neugart’s catalogue data separates continuous torque (T2D), cyclic torque (T2Z) and maximum torque (T2max), which is the right way to size a servo gearbox: check the cyclic torque against the acceleration peaks of a repeating move, and the maximum against emergency stops. The split between economy and precision ranges is mainly about backlash, stiffness and sealing; economy units have standard backlash in the 6 to 28 arcmin range and IP54, precision units 1 to 8 arcmin and IP65. Operating temperature is published as -25 to 90 °C across these ranges. Oriental Motor, among others, lists Neugart PLE gearheads as an option on its stepper motors, which shows how widely the PLE is used as a motor-mounted planetary.

Industries served

Planetary gearboxes of this kind sit on servo and stepper axes in packaging, handling, printing, machine tools, robotics and intralogistics. Neugart also offers application-specific gearboxes, including the HLAE hygienic design for food and pharmaceutical machinery.

Global and UK presence

Neugart lists sales companies in the USA, China, Italy, France, Turkey, Brazil and Switzerland, plus partners in other countries. It has no UK subsidiary; its locations page names HMK Automation Group Ltd, Kappa House, Hatter Street, Congleton, Cheshire CW12 1QJ, as sales partner for the United Kingdom and Ireland (sales@hmkdirect.com, +44 1260 279411). UK engineers can buy through HMK or contact the Kippenheim head office.

What to have ready for a Neugart enquiry

Give the full type code from the gearbox label: it identifies series, frame size, ratio, backlash class, output type and motor adaption. Add the motor make and model (the adapter and input clamp depend on the motor shaft and flange), required output torque and speed, duty cycle, mounting orientation and any radial or axial loads on the output.

Sourcing Neugart gearboxes through Specify Motion

Specify Motion is independent of Neugart and is not affiliated with it. We can help source Neugart gearboxes for an existing machine, or propose planetary gearboxes from our supply network that meet the same published figures. Find a replacement takes the type code and the requirement.
