Who Elmo Motion Control is
Elmo Motion Control is an Israeli developer and manufacturer of servo drives and multi-axis motion controllers. It is known for packing high current into very small drives: the Twitter modules, for example, are PCB-mounted drives about the size of a postage stamp (35 x 30 mm) that can deliver tens of amps. That makes Elmo drives a frequent choice where the drive must sit inside the machine or the joint, such as robot arms, mobile robots, exoskeletons and compact semiconductor tools. Elmo, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, Twitter and Maestro are trademarks of their owner.
Elmo says it has been in motion control for over 35 years, employs more than 350 people, and has offices in 10 locations with a worldwide distribution network.
History and ownership
Elmo has specialised in motion control since 1988. Its acquisition announcement names Haim Monhait as founder and CEO at the time, and gave a workforce of over 330, most of them at the Petach-Tikva factory. Development, production, sales and support are based at the Petach-Tikva headquarters near Tel Aviv, with additional production at Elmo Motion Control Poland in Warsaw.
Bosch Rexroth, the drive and control technology business of the Bosch Group, agreed to buy Elmo on 4 September 2022 and completed the takeover on 30 November 2022 after antitrust approval. Bosch Rexroth said Elmo’s products complement its ctrlX AUTOMATION platform and that Elmo customers continue to be served by Elmo’s own sales organisation. In Japan, Elmo is represented through Bosch Rexroth Corporation. The legal entity in Israel is Elmo Motion Control Ltd., registration number 511264343.
Product portfolio
PCB-mounted servo drives
The Platinum Twitter is an EtherCAT drive of 35 x 30 x 15.3 mm and 26 g without heatsink, with continuous currents up to 80 A, DC bus up to 195 V and up to 5.6 kW continuous output in the R variants. It adds functional safety to IEC 61800-5-2 SIL 3 and PL e with Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE), and safety functions such as STO, SS1, SLS and SLP. The Gold Twitter is the same footprint in EtherCAT or CANopen versions with STO, from 1 A to 80 A continuous depending on variant.
Panel-mounted servo drives
The Gold Solo Whistle is a 106 g panel-mounted drive with continuous currents up to 20 A and up to 1.6 kW continuous, with EtherCAT or CANopen and STO. The Platinum Solo Bell brings Platinum functional safety to a panel-mounted drive of up to 25 A and 2 kW, supporting up to three feedback devices at once. Both families accept a long list of encoder protocols, including BiSS, EnDat 2.2 and 3, HIPERFACE DSL, SSI, resolver and several Japanese serial protocols. Our servo drives hub covers how to size continuous and peak current.
Motion controllers
The Platinum Maestro is an EtherCAT master controller for up to 256 axes, with cycle times down to 250 µs and programming in IEC 61131-3 and C++. The newer Titanium Maestro uses a quad-core 1.9 GHz processor, handles up to 96 axes, reaches a 100 µs cycle on up to 16 axes, and is programmed in Python, C/C++/C# or Blockly, with MATLAB/Simulink software-in-the-loop support. See our motion controllers hub.
Technologies and standards
Elmo’s drives are built around very high power density and efficiency (over 99 % at rated power, as published for several models), which keeps heat low enough for PCB or in-joint mounting. The Platinum family’s integrated functional safety to IEC 61800-5-2 SIL 3 / PL e, with safe encoder support and FSoE, lets safety-rated motion run without separate safety relays on each axis. Network support centres on EtherCAT, with CANopen on many Gold products. Twitter drives are rated IP00, so the enclosure or joint housing must provide protection.
Industries served
Elmo’s drives suit robot joints, collaborative and mobile robots, AGVs, exoskeletons, medical and laboratory devices and semiconductor equipment, where small size and low weight matter. The Maestro controllers serve multi-axis machines that coordinate many such drives over EtherCAT. Our robotics and cobots and semiconductor and electronics pages list the other parts these machines need.
Global and UK presence
Elmo lists sales and technical support centres in Germany (Walter-Oehmichen-Str. 20, 68519 Viernheim) and Italy (Arese, near Milan), production in Poland, and further centres in North America, China, Korea and Singapore. There is no UK office on the contact page; UK engineers are served from the European centres or through Elmo’s distribution network.
What to have ready for an Elmo enquiry
Quote the complete part number from the drive label or configurator: it encodes current and voltage rating, network, feedback options, safety capability and mounting. Add the motor data (type, rated and peak current, voltage, pole count), feedback device and protocol, DC bus voltage, and the master or PLC the drive must talk to.
Sourcing Elmo parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Elmo Motion Control and Bosch Rexroth and is not affiliated with them. We can help source Elmo drives and controllers for an existing machine, or propose servo drives and motion controllers from our supply network that meet the same published figures. Find a replacement takes the part number and the requirement.
