In short:A laboratory positioning requirement should specify the result at the sample or tool. Resolution, repeatability and absolute accuracy are different requirements.

Define the measurement at the working point

Record travel or angular range, payload, orientation and how position is verified. State whether the requirement is to return to the same point, reach a known coordinate or move smoothly during a measurement. Include the time allowed for settling and any optical, electrical or acoustic disturbance limits.

A motor encoder measures the motor’s movement. Backlash, screw errors, structural compliance and thermal movement can change the relationship to the sample. Where the result matters at the load, discuss the feedback arrangement and error budget rather than relying on nominal step size.

Match the technology to the movement

A screw-driven stage, linear motor, voice coil and piezo device serve different travel and duty requirements. A short-stroke actuator is not automatically a substitute for a longer-travel stage. Compare the complete working envelope, load guidance, control method and installation conditions.

For vertical movement, describe gravity loads and what must happen on power loss. For continuous scanning, provide the velocity range and permitted ripple. For move-and-measure operation, describe the acceleration and settling interval as well as final position.

Consider the instrument environment

Vacuum, cleanroom use, temperature stability, magnetic sensitivity and contamination may influence component materials and construction. These requirements must be stated explicitly and verified for the exact product. A component suitable in one instrument is not evidence that it is approved for every laboratory or medical application.

Compactness can also move heat sources close to sensors or samples. Explain the mounting structure and available cooling so motor and drive selection can account for the installation. The encoder accuracy guide explains why adding more counts cannot correct every source of positioning error.

Illustrative design discussion

A hypothetical sample stage that must repeatedly revisit a feature may prioritise repeatability and settling. Another instrument may need absolute position over the full travel. The two requirements can lead to different feedback and calibration choices even if travel and payload are identical. This is a selection exercise, not a reported customer project.

Send a drawing or sketch, travel, payload, motion timing and the tolerance at the working point. Include prototype quantity and likely production demand. We can discuss component and package options, with any integration, validation or documentation scope confirmed for the project.

Turn the requirement into an enquiry

Send the application, quantities and deadline, plus any existing model codes. We can discuss the original part, alternatives or a matched package. Compatibility, availability and supply arrangements are confirmed for the specific enquiry.
