Who ACS Motion Control is
ACS Motion Control is an Israeli manufacturer of motion controllers and servo drives for OEM precision motion systems. Its products generate motion profiles, close servo loops and synchronise motion with process events and I/O, and they are aimed at semiconductor, electronics, laser processing and biomedical equipment. The company was founded to give semiconductor inspection system makers the precision motion control they needed, and that market still shapes its range.
The core of the offer is the SPiiPlus platform: EtherCAT master controllers, drive modules and control modules that combine both, designed so a machine can scale from a few axes to as many as 128.
History and ownership
ACS was founded in 1985 as ACS Electronics Ltd. near Haifa by Ze’ev Kirshenboim, Amatsia Ben Eliezer and Jacob Engel. A partnership with linear motor stage pioneer Anorad followed in 1987, and in 1993 ACS launched the SB series controller with integrated digital current-loop drives. It moved to Migdal Ha-Emek in 1998 and in 1999 bought Tech 80, Inc. in the USA, renamed ACS Tech-80.
The first SPiiPlus controller with integrated servo drives came in 2003. The company was renamed ACS Motion Control Ltd. in 2007, released its first EtherCAT servo drive, the UDMnt, in 2010 and set up ACS Motion Control China in 2011. In 2017 it joined the Physik Instrumente (PI) Group and established ACS Motion Control GmbH in Germany, while stating that it keeps its independence. It co-developed XL SCAN with SCANLAB in 2018, moved its headquarters to Yokneam in 2020 and launched the EC-PX controller in 2024.
Motion controllers
The SPiiPlus EC-PX is the current flagship EtherCAT MainDevice, available for 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128 axes with a maximum EtherCAT cycle rate of 10 kHz, panel or DIN-rail mounting and TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, Modbus and RS-232 host links. It replaces the SPiiPlus EC, a 4 to 64 axis controller at up to 5 kHz that ACS lists as end of life from 31 December 2027 and not recommended for new designs. PC-embedded SC-HP (5 kHz) and SC-LT (1 kHz) controllers and the ES, which adds a DS402 drive node, complete the line. See our motion controllers hub.
Control modules with integrated drives
The SPiiPlus MC4U combines a 2 to 64 axis controller with up to eight integrated drive axes in 9, 11, 19 or 22 inch enclosures, from 85–400 V AC, with current listed as 45 / 90 A per axis for up to four axes or 20 / 40 A for up to eight. It can act as EtherCAT MainDevice or as a SubDevice. Smaller CM modules (CMnt, CMxa, CMhv, CMac-PX) and the MP4U cover one to eight drive axes.
Servo drive modules
ACS offers 17 drive modules. The UDMhv is the high-power one- or two-axis unit for 230 V or 400–480 V AC, with currents up to 20 / 60 A per axis, up to four encoder channels and certified STO, aimed at large XY stages. The NPMpm NanoPWM drive runs from 12–100 V DC at up to 13.3 / 40 A per axis and targets nanometre-precision stages. Between them sit UDM modules for 12–48 V DC, 12–150 V DC and 100–440 V AC supplies, and a PCB-mounted UDMcb. ACS gives current as a pair of figures without stating which is continuous, so confirm ratings from the datasheet.
For machines that use another maker’s EtherCAT master, the IDM series offers DS402 drives in four models from 12–48 V DC to 100–440 V AC, up to 30 / 60 A per axis. Our servo drives hub explains linear and PWM drive trade-offs.
When specifying an ACS axis, the useful inputs are the stage type (linear motor, voice coil or rotary), the bus voltage and peak current, the encoder interface and resolution, the in-position stability or jitter the process needs, and the EtherCAT cycle rate of the rest of the machine. ACS’s architecture lets a controller drive its own modules and third-party EtherCAT drives on the same network, so an existing machine’s drive mix also matters.
Industries served
ACS names semiconductor, electronics, laser processing and biomedical markets. Typical machines are wafer inspection and metrology tools, electronics assembly, laser cutting and scanning, and high-precision XY stages driven by linear motors. Our semiconductor and electronics and medical and laboratory pages cover those requirements.
Global and UK presence
ACS has subsidiaries in the United States, Germany and China, and its contact page lists offices in Yokneam (Israel), Edina, Minnesota and Fremont, California (USA), Karlsruhe (Germany), Shanghai (China) and Singapore. There is no UK office listed, so UK engineers deal with the Karlsruhe office or ACS’s distributor and partner network.
Sourcing ACS parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of ACS Motion Control and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source ACS controllers and drives for an existing machine, or propose equivalent parts from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.
