Who Oriental Motor is
Oriental Motor is a Japanese manufacturer of small precision motors and the electronics that drive them. Its range covers stepper motors and drivers, the AlphaStep family of closed-loop steppers, brushless DC motors, AC speed-control motors, gear motors and compact electric actuators such as cylinders, linear slides and hollow rotary tables. Most of the range is sized for OEM machines and instruments with many small axes rather than heavy industrial drives. Oriental Motor and αSTEP (AlphaStep) are trademarks of their owner.
History and ownership
The business traces its start to 1885, when Yasutaro Kuraishi began trading in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, as a maker and distributor of electrical and medical equipment. After the factory was destroyed during the bombing of Tokyo, the business was incorporated in 1950 as Tōyō Dendōki Co., Ltd. with five employees, and renamed ORIENTAL MOTOR CO., LTD. in 1953.
Overseas expansion began with a US subsidiary in 1978. A representative office opened in Düsseldorf in October 1979 and became a subsidiary in 1982; Oriental Motor (Europa) GmbH remains the European headquarters. Sales offices in the UK and Italy followed in 1996, and a Swiss subsidiary in 2016.
On the product side, the AlphaStep AS Series, a stepper with closed-loop control, was launched in 1998. The DG hollow rotary actuator followed in 2001, the AZ Series with a battery-free absolute sensor in 2013, EAC and EAS electric actuators in 2014 and the BLE2 brushless motor in 2015. The UK and European companies are subsidiaries of ORIENTAL MOTOR CO., LTD.
Product portfolio
Stepper and closed-loop stepper motors
The AlphaStep AZ Series pairs a hybrid stepper with a battery-free mechanical absolute encoder that tracks position over ±900 revolutions from home, so the axis does not need to re-home after a power loss. Drivers are available for AC supplies or 24/48 VDC, with EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET versions. The motors checked range from 28 mm (0.095 N·m holding torque) to 85 mm (4 N·m), with IP40 to IP66 ratings depending on frame.
The PKP Series is the open-loop 2-phase hybrid stepper range in frames from 13 mm (NEMA 5) to 85 mm (NEMA 34), with 1.8° and 0.9° step angles, holding torques up to 9.5 N·m and geared versions up to 120 N·m. Our servo vs stepper guide explains when a closed-loop stepper can replace a servo.
Brushless DC motors
The BLV Series is a low-voltage brushless DC motor and driver system at 200 W (24 VDC) or 400 W (48 VDC), running 80 to 4,000 rpm with Modbus RTU over RS-485, aimed at battery-powered equipment such as AGVs and AMRs. The BLE2 Series, introduced in 2015, is a further brushless motor range. See the AGV and AMR page for related components.
Electric actuators
The EAC electric cylinders use a ball screw driven by an AZ motor, in 42 mm and 60 mm frames, with 50 to 300 mm stroke, up to 500 N push force and ±0.02 mm repeatability. EZS and EAS linear slides offer strokes up to 850 mm and 500 mm and speeds up to 800 mm/s, and the DGII hollow rotary actuator provides a large-bore output table for indexing. Our linear actuator hub and sizing guide cover selection.
Technologies and standards
Oriental Motor’s distinguishing technology is the AlphaStep closed-loop stepper, which keeps the simplicity and holding stiffness of a stepper while detecting position to avoid lost steps. The AZ Series’ mechanical absolute encoder needs no battery, removing a maintenance item that battery-backed absolute encoders have. Published typical stopping accuracy is ±0.05° with no load. Network drivers include EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET, and DC versions also support SSCNET III/H and MECHATROLINK. The same AZ motor and driver platform drives the company’s actuators, so one driver family can cover rotary and linear axes.
Industries served
Oriental Motor’s products are built into OEM equipment: typical homes are laboratory and analytical instruments, packaging and labelling machines, printing, electronics handling and inspection equipment. Oriental Motor promotes the BLV Series specifically for AGV and AMR drivetrains.
Global and UK presence
Oriental Motor (UK) Ltd. is the UK company. Its imprint gives Unit 5 Faraday Office Park, Rankine Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG24 8QB, telephone +44 1256 347090, email info@oriental-motor.co.uk; the European sales office page lists a UK office at Blythe Valley Business Park, Solihull B90 8AG with the same telephone number. The UK website also lists distributors. UK engineers can buy direct or through those distributors.
What to have ready for an Oriental Motor enquiry
Give the full model number of motor and driver (Oriental Motor sells many items as matched packages), the supply voltage, whether the driver is pulse-input, built-in controller or network type, and the fieldbus. For geared motors, add the gearhead ratio and type; for actuators, stroke, load, orientation and speed.
Sourcing Oriental Motor parts through Specify Motion
Specify Motion is independent of Oriental Motor and is not affiliated with it. We can help source Oriental Motor products for an existing machine, or propose stepper, closed-loop stepper, brushless motors and actuators from our supply network that meet the same published figures. Find a replacement takes the model number and the requirement.
