Who Schneider Electric is in motion control
Schneider Electric SE is a French group best known for electrical distribution, energy management and industrial automation. Its automation business covers PLCs (Modicon), drives, safety, sensors and motion control. Lexium is the name of its motion range, which runs from compact servo drives and motors through multi-axis servo systems to integrated drives, stepper drives, robots and a multi-carrier transport system.
This profile concentrates on the Lexium servo motors and drives and the motion controllers that coordinate them. Lexium, PacDrive and Modicon are trademarks of Schneider Electric.
History and ownership
Schneider Electric’s history begins in 1836, when brothers Adolphe and Joseph-Eugène Schneider took over the Le Creusot foundry in Burgundy. For more than a century Schneider & Cie was a heavy engineering business: it built France’s first steam locomotives in 1838 and made armaments until it left that business in 1949. It moved into electrical equipment in the twentieth century, opening an electrical equipment factory in Champagne-sur-Seine in 1902.
The automation business was built largely through acquisition. Télémécanique, founded in 1924, was acquired in 1988; Square D in 1991; Merlin Gerin in 1992; and Modicon, whose 084 PLC dates from 1968, in 1997. The same year Schneider’s Transparent Factory concept brought Ethernet and Modbus/TCP onto the factory floor. In 2009 the Merlin Gerin and Télémécanique brands moved to the Schneider Electric name, and in 2016 the EcoStruxure architecture and IoT platform were launched. The group took full ownership of the industrial software company AVEVA in 2022.
Schneider Electric SE is a European company with a board of directors, registered in Nanterre under number 542 048 574, and owned by its shareholders. In the UK the business is Schneider Electric Ltd, registered in England under number 1407228.
Lexium servo and motion portfolio
Servo drives
The general-purpose range is Lexium 32: four drive models from 0.15 to 11 kW, paired with BMH and BSH servo motors. For smaller machines, Lexium 28 bundles drives with BCH2 motors from 0.05 to 4.5 kW, and Lexium 23 Plus covers 0.1 to 7.5 kW.
For PacDrive 3 systems, the Lexium 52 stand-alone drives run from 0.4 to 7 kW. The Lexium 62 multi-axis servo system spans 0.95 to 24 kW, with single drives from 6 to 130 A peak, double drives from 2 x 6 to 2 x 27 A peak and shared power supplies. It talks Sercos to the controller and has embedded STO, SS1, SS2, SOS, SLS, SDI and SMS safety functions. SH3 and MH3 motors, and SHS stainless steel motors for hygienic areas, pair with these drives.
Integrated drives
The Lexium 32i puts the servo drive on the motor, from 0.6 to 2.2 kW, which removes cabinet space and motor cables from decentralised machine designs. Lexium 62 ILM modules do the same within PacDrive 3, and the ILA, ILE and ILS integrated drives serve simpler positioning duties.
Motion controllers
The PacDrive 3 LMC Eco, Pro and Pro 2 controllers synchronise up to 130 servo or robot axes at a 1 ms network update rate and handle up to 255 virtual axes, combining PLC, HMI interface and IT functions in one unit. Schneider also lists the Modicon M262 logic and motion controller, the Modicon LMC058 and the Modicon M660 IPC motion controller. Our motion controller hub explains how to size a controller by axis count and update rate.
Technologies and standards
Lexium 62 safety functions are executed in the drive and selected over Sercos, with PLCopen safety function blocks available, and the inverter-enable safety input is specified to EN ISO 13849-1. PacDrive 3 uses Sercos as its real-time axis bus, while Schneider’s wider automation offer leans on Ethernet and Modbus/TCP, a protocol family it has promoted since the Modicon era. The Lexium robots (delta, SCARA and Cartesian) are controlled from the same PacDrive 3 controllers, so a packaging line can run servo axes and pick-and-place robots from one program.
Industries served
Schneider’s Lexium 62 page points to general machine control, packaging machine automation and material handling. The delta robots are positioned for pick-and-place, and the MC12 multi-carrier for moving, positioning and grouping products in discrete-process machines. See our packaging and food page for the motion needs of that market.
Global and UK presence
Schneider Electric Ltd’s UK head office is at 2nd Floor, 80 Victoria Street, London SW1E 5JL, telephone 0330 587 8030, and the company operates from several sites across the UK. Engineers can buy Lexium products from Schneider Electric directly or through the distributors listed under “Where to buy” on se.com/uk.
