Who Nanotec is
Nanotec is a German maker of compact electric motors and the electronics that drive them. Its range covers hybrid stepper motors, brushless DC (BLDC) motors, motors with integrated controllers, standalone motor controllers and linear actuators. It concentrates on low-voltage DC systems up to about 72 V. The company is known for its Plug & Drive concept: a motor with the controller, drive and encoder built into the housing, so a machine builder wires only power and a fieldbus.
Nanotec’s customers are machine builders in laboratory automation, medical engineering, packaging, semiconductor production and general automation, where many small axes need to be positioned reliably.
History and ownership
Nanotec has developed and marketed products since 1991. In 1996 it introduced what it calls the first Plug & Drive motor with an integrated controller. The legal entity is Nanotec Electronic GmbH, registered in Munich (HRB 316458), and its managing directors are Stephan Huber, Dr. Christian Hainzlmaier, Durmus Özcan and Elke Zec. The company does not publish a parent group or headcount. In January 2026 it received the TOP 100 award for innovative German mid-sized companies for the fourth time.
R&D and low-volume production are in Feldkirchen and Varna, Bulgaria. High-volume production is at its plant in ChangZhou, China, with further processing in Germany. US sales come from Nanotec Electronic U.S., Inc. in Auburn, Massachusetts.
Product portfolio
Integrated motors
PD4-E and PD6 smart servo motors combine a BLDC or stepper motor with controller and encoder in 42 to 86 mm flanges (NEMA 17 to 34). BLDC versions are rated 52.5 to 940 W at 3,000–4,000 rpm, on 12–57.6 V DC. A single-turn absolute encoder is standard, with a multi-turn option. Fieldbus options are CANopen, EtherCAT, Modbus RTU/TCP, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET, and IP65 is available. See how to select an integrated servo motor.
Stepper and BLDC motors
- ST and SC hybrid steppers come in sizes from NEMA 6 (14 mm) to NEMA 42 (110 mm), with 1.8° or 0.9° steps. Holding torque runs up to 2,500 Ncm (25 Nm) on the largest ST11018, and current up to 8 A per winding. Flat, hollow-shaft and IP65 versions are also offered.
- BLDC motors come in internal and external-rotor and IP65 versions, plus DKA frameless BLDC kits from 25 to 115 mm outer diameter, with up to 7.8 Nm peak and 10,000 rpm.

Motor controllers
- The N5 drives BLDC and stepper motors at 12–72 V, 10–18 A rated and up to 40 A peak, with EtherCAT, CANopen, EtherNet/IP and Modbus versions.
- The C5-E drives NEMA 17 to 34 steppers and BLDC motors at 12–48 V, 6–10 A rated and up to 30 A peak.
- Others include the N6, CL3-E, CL4-E, CLC servo drives, plug-in CPB controllers and a four-axis controller.
See how to select a stepper drive.
Linear actuators
Stepper linear actuators come in non-captive (LA), captive (LGA) and external-nut (LSA) versions, from NEMA 6 to NEMA 23. They deliver up to 1,316.6 N and 325.1 mm/s, with leads from 0.4 to 6.35 mm and anti-backlash nut options. BLDC linear actuators and versions with integrated controllers are also offered. See how to select a linear actuator.
Technologies
Most Nanotec controllers drive both BLDC and stepper motors, so one controller family can cover a machine’s mix of axes. Its integrated motors carry an absolute encoder as standard, which allows closed-loop stepper operation. Running a stepper in closed loop removes lost steps and lets the drive cut current at light load; see closed-loop stepper motors explained. The fieldbus choice is wide, from Modbus RTU and CANopen to EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET, so match the controller version to your PLC early. Check one published figure with Nanotec before you rely on it: the stepper range page title says “up to 13.5 Nm”, while the ST11018 listing gives 25 Nm.
C5-E or N5?
Both controllers drive steppers and BLDC motors from one design and offer the same broad fieldbus choice. The C5-E covers NEMA 17 to 34 motors at 12–48 V and up to 10 A rated. The N5 extends the supply to 72 V and the rated current to 18 A (40 A peak). That higher bus voltage keeps stepper torque up at speed, and the extra current suits larger BLDC motors. Choose the C5-E for compact cabinets with many small axes and the N5 for the bigger axes of a machine.
Industries served
Nanotec names automation systems, laboratory automation, medical engineering, packaging and semiconductor production, with service robotics as a growth area. See medical and laboratory, packaging and food and semiconductor and electronics.
Global and UK presence
Nanotec lists sites in Germany, Bulgaria, China and the USA, and a local sales contact finder on its website. No UK office is listed, so UK engineers usually contact Feldkirchen or the sales contact named for their region.
Specify Motion is independent of Nanotec and is not a distributor for the company. Our engineers can help source Nanotec products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo and stepper motors hub.
