In short:Precision and economy planetary servo gearboxes, right-angle units and flange-output reducers from other makers can meet the published figures of many WITTENSTEIN alpha gearheads, provided the output type, ratio, T2N, T2B and emergency-stop torque, backlash, stiffness, input speed, output bearing loads and motor adapter all match.
What WITTENSTEIN makes
WITTENSTEIN SE is a German drive-technology group. Its alpha business makes low-backlash planetary servo gearboxes, and WITTENSTEIN cyber motor makes servo, kit and torque motors. WITTENSTEIN and alpha are trademarks of their owner.
The alpha coaxial range is organised in lines. TP+ (output flange) and SP+ (output shaft) form the Advanced Line; XP+ (shaft) and RP+ (flange, for high axial and radial loads) the Premium Line; NP, NTP, NPS, NPR and LPB+ the Value Line; and CP the Basic Line. Right-angle versions and the premo servo actuators, which combine motor and gearbox, complete the picture. Engineers specify alpha gearheads on servo axes where backlash, stiffness and torque density matter, such as gantries, rack-and-pinion drives and rotary indexers.
Why engineers look for a WITTENSTEIN alternative
- Lead time on a particular ratio, frame or motor adapter.
- Second source for a machine built in series.
- Budget, where a lower precision class still meets the axis requirement.
- Different format, such as a hollow rotary platform for indexing, a stainless body for washdown, or a rotating-housing gearbox for an AGV wheel.
How to check a planetary gearbox alternative is equivalent
- Output type. Shaft (with key, smooth or splined) or flange, and the exact geometry.
- Ratio. And the number of stages, which affects backlash and efficiency.
- Torque. Nominal, acceleration and emergency-stop torque against your cycle, with the maker’s own service factor method.
- Backlash and stiffness. Backlash class in arcmin and torsional rigidity in Nm/arcmin.
- Input speed. Nominal and maximum; long runs at speed are limited by housing temperature.
- Output bearing. Permitted radial and axial loads and tilting moment at your load positions.
- Motor adapter. Flange, pilot, shaft and clamping hub for your motor.
- Life, lubrication and sealing. Rated life basis, lubricant, mounting position and IP rating.

Gearbox alternatives in our supply network
Precision, shaft output. The Wanshsin WSH is a high-rigidity inline planetary in frames from 060 to 210 with three backlash classes down to super-precision and IP65 sealing. The Wanshsin WTH is built for high radial loads. The Apex Dynamics AD / ADR is a short helical planetary with published accuracy below 1 arcmin.
Flange output. The Wanshsin WAE is a round-flange precision planetary with high input speed capability, aimed at robotics and CNC.
Right-angle. The Wanshsin WSHR adds a spiral bevel stage to the WSH for ratios up to 200:1.
Economy and washdown. The Apex Dynamics P-II / P-IIR family is an economy planetary for high-volume automation, and the Apex AE / AER range includes all-stainless AES and AESR versions with food-grade grease.
premo and cyber motors. For premo servo actuators, the usual alternative is a matched servo motor and precision planetary pair; see selecting a servo motor. For cyber torque motors built into a machine, the TI Series in-runner frameless torque motors span 65 to 410 mm stator OD, and for small low-voltage servo axes the Leadshine ELVM motors run on 24 to 60 VDC.

How the comparison works
The table under this text compares each WITTENSTEIN series we hold data for with the closest product from our supply network, on published figures only. “Equivalent” means a product that meets the stated specification for your application, confirmed by an engineer, not an identical part. Specify Motion is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by WITTENSTEIN, and no logos are used. Names identify products only.
Send the alpha order code and your duty cycle, and we will tell you which alternative fits, or if the original is the better choice.
WITTENSTEIN alpha series and the closest match from our supply network
Each row compares the highest published figures for the series. A match here is a starting point: an engineer confirms the fit for your load, duty, mounting and interface before recommending anything.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct equivalent to an alpha SP+ or TP+?
Several precision planetaries share the common layout: an output shaft for SP+-style units and an output flange for TP+-style units. Frame sizes and flange patterns are often similar but not always identical, so compare the output geometry, pilot and bolt circle, then ratio, nominal and acceleration torque, emergency-stop torque, backlash, torsional rigidity, input speed and output bearing loads at your duty.
What do T2N, T2B and T2NOT mean when comparing gearboxes?
T2N is the nominal output torque for continuous duty, T2B the maximum acceleration torque in normal cycles, and T2NOT the emergency-stop torque. WITTENSTEIN alpha states that T2NOT must not be reached more than 1,000 times over the gearhead's life. Compare like with like, because makers define these figures and their service factors slightly differently. Our gearbox guide explains the sizing.
Can a cheaper gearbox replace a WITTENSTEIN alpha unit?
Sometimes. alpha itself offers Premium, Advanced, Value and Basic lines, which shows the range of precision available. If your axis does not need very low backlash or high stiffness, an economy planetary can be a sound choice. If it reverses torque at speed, or carries high moments, stay with a precision class and check stiffness carefully.
What should I send to get a WITTENSTEIN equivalent proposed?
Send the full alpha order code, the motor model (for the adapter), the duty cycle with torque and speed per segment, emergency-stop torque, output loads and distances, mounting position, ambient temperature, required life and any washdown or food-grade needs. For right-angle units, add the space envelope.
