Who Nabtesco is

Nabtesco Corporation is a Japanese engineering group whose precision reducer business is best known for RV cycloidal gears, the compact, very stiff reduction gears used in the joints of many industrial robots. Alongside cycloidal gears, the precision business makes strain-wave gears, rotary indexers and mechatronic drive systems. RV and Neco are trademarks of their owner.

Precision reduction gears are one of a broad set of Nabtesco businesses that also include railway vehicle equipment, aircraft and marine equipment, commercial vehicle components, automatic doors and platform screen doors, packaging machinery and welfare equipment. The group reports 8,472 consolidated employees at the end of December 2025. Its European precision company says it has production capacity of over one million gearboxes a year, with a plan to reach two million by 2030, and more than 14 million gearbox systems in use worldwide.

History and ownership

Nabtesco traces its roots to two companies. Nippon Air Brake Co. (Nabco) was founded in Kobe in 1925 to make railway air brake equipment. Teijin Seiki began in 1944 in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi, as a spin-off from the predecessor of the Teijin fibre group, taking the Teijin Seiki name in 1945.

In 2003 the two became wholly owned subsidiaries of a new holding company, Nabtesco, which listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in September that year. In October 2004 both were absorbed into Nabtesco, which became an operating holding company.

In Europe, Teijin Seiki Europe GmbH was established in Düsseldorf in 1992 and is now Nabtesco Precision Europe GmbH. Nabtesco Europe GmbH followed in 2017 as the European regional holding company. The group set up a precision reducer company in Shanghai in 2010 and completed a factory in Hamamatsu in 2023.

Product portfolio

RV cycloidal component sets

Component sets are built into the customer’s own housing, which is how robot makers use them. The RV-N series is the compact solid-shaft range for robot joints, in 13 sizes rated from 245 Nm to 28,000 Nm with permissible acceleration torque up to 70,000 Nm. The RV-C series has a central hollow shaft up to 138 mm for cables and hoses, rated from 98 Nm to 11,760 Nm. Nabtesco also lists the original RV series with its own output bearing and the RF-P for high speed in tight spaces.

Plug-and-play cycloidal gearboxes

For machine builders who want a sealed, lubricated gearbox rather than a component set, the RD-C series offers hollow-shaft gearboxes in right-angle, direct and belt-drive versions, rated 98 to 3,136 Nm. The Neco and Neco HT range is modular, adapts to standard servo motors and is rated 245 to 9,000 Nm, with hysteresis loss under 0.5 arcmin.

Strain-wave gears

Nabtesco’s strain-wave range covers gear sets, gear sets with output bearing, complete gearbox units, a digital strain-wave gear with sensors, short gears and actuators, described as having zero backlash. See our gearbox hub and the harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal guide.

Technologies and standards

The RV principle combines a spur-gear first stage with an eccentric, oscillating cycloidal second stage. Many pins share the load, so RV gears tolerate shock loads well; Nabtesco quotes shock capacity of up to 500 % of rated torque, hysteresis loss under 1 arcmin and pure torsional backlash of 0.1 to 0.2 arcmin for its cycloidal range. Compared with strain-wave gearing, cycloidal gears are generally chosen for higher torque, stiffness and shock resistance at a given size, while strain-wave gears are lighter and offer very high single-stage ratios. Nabtesco publishes rated torque, permissible acceleration torque and emergency stop torque separately, and sizing should check all three against the duty cycle.

Industries served

Nabtesco describes itself as the number one supplier in robotics for precision gears. RV gears are used in robot joints and positioners, and the RD and Neco gearboxes in rotary tables, turntables, machine tools and general automation where high torque and stiffness are needed. Our robotics and cobots page covers the other parts a robot joint needs.

Global and UK presence

Nabtesco runs regional precision gear sites for the Americas, Europe and Africa, Asia-Pacific, India and China. Nabtesco Precision Europe GmbH in Düsseldorf (Tiefenbroicher Weg 15, 40472 Düsseldorf, +49 211 17379-0, info@nabtesco.de) serves Europe; its site does not list a UK office, so UK engineers deal with the Düsseldorf team, which publishes regional contact persons.

What to have ready for a Nabtesco enquiry

Quote the full model and ratio code (for example size, series letter and ratio), whether it is a component set or a complete gearbox, and the input arrangement: input gear, motor flange or belt. Add rated and peak output torque, output speed, required life, tilting moment on the output bearing and whether a hollow shaft is needed.

Sourcing Nabtesco gears through Specify Motion

Specify Motion is independent of Nabtesco and is not affiliated with it. We can help source Nabtesco gears for an existing machine, or propose cycloidal, strain-wave or planetary gearboxes from our supply network that meet the same published figures. Find a replacement takes the model code and the requirement.
