Who CubeMars is

CubeMars is a Chinese brand of robot joint actuators and frameless torque motors. Its best-known products are the AK Series, compact actuators that combine a brushless motor, planetary gear stage, driver electronics and encoders in one housing. They have become a common sight in university legged robots, exoskeletons and research humanoids, because a builder can bolt one on, connect a CAN bus and a 24 or 48 V supply, and have a torque-controlled joint.

For OEM engineers, CubeMars sits at the accessible end of the joint actuator market: published prices, small quantities available online, and lightweight parts aimed at dynamic, back-drivable joints rather than heavy industrial duty.

History and ownership

The company behind the brand is Nanchang Kude Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. Its about page describes Kude as a wholly owned subsidiary of Nanchang Sanrui Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. and calls CubeMars a brand under Sanrui Intelligent. The milestones published are:

  • 2009: Sanrui Intelligent established.
  • 2018: the CubeMars brand officially established, building on what the company calls 17 years of motor technology.
  • 2026: a Sanrui IPO is listed on the about page.

CubeMars cites an annual output of 6 million units across the group, in-house R&D, manufacturing and service, and “international certifications” without naming them. It does not publish a headcount.

Product portfolio

Joint actuators

  • The AK Series runs from the 190 g AK40-10 (4.1 Nm peak) to the AK80-64 (48 Nm rated, 120 Nm peak, series maximum, 64:1). The widely used AK10-9 V3.0 gives 18 Nm rated and 53 Nm peak at 48 V through a 9:1 planetary stage, with 21-bit and 15-bit magnetic encoders and CAN control in servo or MIT mode. CubeMars publishes a backlash of 0.18° for the AK80-64.
  • The AKE Series is the quasi-direct-drive range with low ratios (8:1 on the AKE90-8), from the 140 g AKE40-6 to the AKE90-8 at 55 Nm rated and 170 Nm peak at 48 V.

Quasi-direct-drive (QDD) actuators use a large-diameter motor and a low gear ratio so the joint stays back-drivable and can sense contact through motor current. The trade-off against a high-ratio harmonic actuator is lower continuous torque density and more output backlash. Our guide to harmonic vs planetary vs cycloidal gearing covers that choice.

Frameless torque motors

  • The RI Series are frameless inrunner motors from 25 mm (RI20, 72 mNm peak) to 104 mm diameter (RI100, 4.95 Nm peak).
  • The RO Series are frameless outrunners from the RO40 Lite (0.6 Nm peak) to the 113.5 mm RO100 (12 Nm peak).

These let a designer build a custom joint around their own bearings, gear stage and encoder. See frameless motor sizing for robot joints and the frameless torque motors hub.

Technologies

The AK and AKE products are built around field-oriented control in an integrated driver, dual encoders on newer versions (one on the motor, one on the output), and CAN bus with a choice of a position/velocity servo mode or the impedance-style “MIT mode” popular in legged robotics. Encoder resolution, rated versus peak torque and thermal limits differ a lot between models, so it is worth comparing each product page rather than the series headline.

Industries served

CubeMars names legged and foot-type robots, exoskeletons, AGVs, collaborative robot arms, humanoid robots and industrial automation as its target applications. Most published use is in research, education and early-stage product development. See robotics and cobots for how joint actuators are specified for production machines.

AK or AKE: a quick way to choose

Start from the joint’s continuous torque, not the peak. A walking robot’s knee spends most of its time holding body weight, so the rated (continuous) figure and the motor’s temperature rise decide the size; the peak figure only has to cover jumps, impacts and short accelerations. Where CubeMars publishes both, peak is roughly three times rated (for example 18 Nm and 53 Nm on the AK10-9 V3.0), so a design sized on peak alone will overheat. Choose a higher ratio such as the AK80-64 when the joint needs holding torque at low speed and back-drivability matters less; choose an 8:1 AKE or AK model when the joint must be fast, transparent to external forces and able to absorb impacts. Check the published voltage, bus and control mode against your controller before committing.

Global and UK presence

CubeMars sells directly from Nanchang and through its online shop. Its contact page lists no overseas offices or distributors, and there is no UK office. UK engineers should allow for import lead times, CE/UKCA documentation checks and the level of technical support needed when moving from prototype to production.

What to send when specifying a joint actuator

Give the continuous and peak torque at the joint, speed, duty cycle, supply voltage, the bus your controller uses (CAN, EtherCAT), required encoder resolution and whether output-side absolute position is needed, mass and envelope limits, backlash tolerance, and environment.

Specify Motion is independent of CubeMars. Our engineers can help source CubeMars products or propose equivalents from our supply network on published figures; see find a replacement or the servo and stepper motors hub.
