Who Allient is

Allient is a US group that supplies precision motion, control and power-quality products to equipment makers in aerospace, defence, medical, industrial, vehicle and other markets. It is organised into three technology pillars: Allied Motion, covering motors, drives and motion systems; Allient Controls, covering industrial automation and control systems; and Allient Power, covering power conversion and power quality.

Many engineers will know the motion business by its former name, Allied Motion. Its strengths are a broad range of frameless and housed brushless motors, many of them customisable, and compact low-voltage servo drives that suit robots, mobile machines and medical devices.

History and ownership

The company’s roots go back to Hathaway Corp., founded in 1939 and incorporated as a public company under Colorado law in 1962. In 2001 Hathaway decided to concentrate on motion and divest its instrumentation business, which it sold in 2002. The company was renamed Allied Motion Technologies in 2003 and formed Allied Motion Controls in 2010.

Growth since then has been driven by acquisitions, which the company’s history marks in 2002, 2004, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2018 and every year from 2020 to 2024. In 2023 the business renamed itself Allient, from “Allied Nexus Technologies”, and set up the Allient Controls and Allient Power pillars. Allient Defense followed in December 2024. Allient is headquartered in Buffalo, New York.

Frameless torque motors

Frameless motors are a core strength, and they are the parts most often designed straight into robot joints, gimbals and rotary tables.

  • MegaFlux frameless torque motors come in 12 diameters from 60 to 330 mm, with continuous stall torque up to 181 Nm, 48–300 V DC bus options and rated speeds from 330 to 4,000 rpm. Clear apertures reach 582 mm.
  • KinetiMax HPD frameless motors are a high-power-density range in six sizes from 62 to 125 mm, rated 0.24 to 6.7 Nm and 108 to 1,171 W on 12–72 V DC, aimed at robots, AGVs and handheld power tools where high torque and low cogging matter.
  • HT frameless torque motors are the small end, nine sizes from 19 to 127 mm with stall torque from 0.008 to 9.2 Nm and rated speeds up to 14,500 rpm on 24–100 V DC.

The Quantum, SR, ElectroFlux and SA axial-flux series complete the frameless line-up. For sizing method, see our frameless torque motors hub and the guide to frameless motor sizing for robot joints.

Servo and brushless motors

The HeiMotion Dynamic servo motors are permanent-magnet synchronous motors in 60 to 190 mm flanges, rated 1.0 to 66.5 Nm and 315 W to 13.9 kW, for bus voltages from 24 to 560 V DC. HeiMotion Premium, stainless-steel and HeiTronX integrated versions extend the family, and planetary gearmotor versions are offered. Quantum NEMA housed torque motors cover NEMA 17 to 56 frames with 0.05 to 11.1 Nm rated torque, and the INB and NB series cover small brushless DC motors, including mil-aero versions.

Servo drives and controls

The Pyxmos Module servo drive is an 80 x 33 x 83 mm drive for 22–90 V DC buses, rated 5 to 15 A continuous and 50 to 1,350 W, with EtherCAT and CANopen, 20 kHz torque, speed and position loops and A/B, BiSS-C, EnDat 2.2, Hall and sin/cos feedback. The Pyxmos Rack holds one to six modules in a UL508-certified 3U enclosure. Other drives include the Pyxmos FLUX, the Ring 1-Series (up to 400 W) and the H-Drive series with HIPERFACE DSL support.

Specifying an Allient frameless motor

Frameless kits ship as a separate rotor and stator, so the machine provides the bearings, housing, shaft and feedback. When asking for a quote or an equivalent, state the continuous and peak torque at the joint, the available outside diameter and stack length, the minimum bore needed for cables or a slip ring, the DC bus voltage and the cooling path for the stator. Allient’s datasheets list several stack lengths and windings per diameter, so the same frame can often be tuned to the bus voltage rather than stepping up a size. Confirm the encoder and drive pairing at the same time.

Industries served

Allient names aerospace, defence, medical, industrial and vehicle markets, and its product pages point to robotics, AGVs, drones and hygienic equipment. Our robotics and cobots, AGV and AMR and defence pages cover the motion requirements of those sectors.

Global and UK presence

Allient runs three regional Solutions Centers: North America in Buffalo, Europe in Bromma, Sweden, and Asia in China, supported by technology units and sales units around the world. Its contact page lists no UK office, so UK engineers usually deal with the European centre.

Sourcing Allient parts through Specify Motion

Specify Motion is independent of Allient and is not affiliated with it. We can help you source Allient and Allied Motion motors and drives for an existing design, or propose equivalent parts from our supply network on published figures where a second source makes sense. The find a replacement form is the quickest way to send us a part number or nameplate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Allient website?

The company website is allient.com. It brings together the former Allied Motion product pages, organised by motors (servo, brushless, frameless, stepper), servo drives, motion controllers and other products, with datasheets on each product page. It also has the company history, the investor pages and the contact details for its three regional Solutions Centers.

What is Allient's phone number?

The North America Solutions Center in Buffalo publishes +1 716 242 7535, and the Europe Solutions Center in Bromma, Sweden, publishes +46 8 546 11 100. The Asia Solutions Center in China is on +852 2607 4038. All three list the same enquiry email, inquiry@allient.com.

Where is Allient's headquarters?

Allient states that it is headquartered in Buffalo, New York. Its contact page gives 6400 Main Street, Suite 150, Buffalo, NY 14221, as the North America Solutions Center, with a notice that the company has moved there from its earlier Commerce Drive address in Buffalo.

Is Allient the same company as Allied Motion?
